Rates

General

We set our rates at a competitive level but it is impossible to quote one rate that is applicable to every job, since every job is different. The actual rate charged depends on the nature of the work involved.  Factors affecting the rate may include, for example, type of task (translation / proof-reading / DTP), text difficulty, subject area, file format, requirement for special formatting etc. We will be very happy to send you an estimate, without any obligation.  Please click here to find out what we need and what you need to do.

Important: our estimate will be a guide price based on the information you provide; the final cost of your job will depend on the work actually agreed and carried out.

Types of Rate

Translation rates can be quoted in different ways: per word, per 1000 words, or per line based on the text in either the source language or the target language.  You can choose how you want us to quote, or simply leave it to us.

Normally, we prefer to quote rates based on the source language text because this benefits you, our client (further information below). Whether we then use a line count or word count depends on the usual practice in your own country.

Often extra requirements appear during the translation process, e.g. special formatting, complications caused by translation of illustrations or embedded graphics etc.  Work of this kind, as well as DTP, revision and proof-reading, is charged at an hourly rate.

Source Language / Target Language

The reason we prefer a rate based on the source language is simply one of price transparency.  This way our clients can clearly calculate a reliable final price at the outset because they already know the total number of words or characters in the source language text. This is not true for the target language text, of course.  There is an added benefit for both client and translator: any suspicion that the translator has increased the number of words in the target language text for purely financial reasons is completely removed!

Rate per Word / Rate per Line

We have no particular preference here.  If you do not state which method you want us to use, we will follow normal practice in your own country.

In Germany, rates are quoted "per line".  Our definition of a line is 55 characters or keystrokes, including spaces (see Terms and Conditions).

In the USA prices are calculated at a rate per word, whereas in the UK a rate per 1000 words is the norm.

Rate per Hour

Revision, proof-reading, DTP and special services are charged at an hourly rate.  If a requirement for work of this kind can be identified at the outset then the hourly rate, together with the potential number of hours required, will be included in the job order.  However, such a requirement may also only crop up once translation work is under way; in this case, we will always obtain written authorization from the client before any additional chargeable work is carried out.

Fixed Prices

If required, we can also agree to fulfil your order for a total price fixed in advance (a "quotation" rather than an "estimate").  The prerequisite is that all the requirements of the job can be identified at the outset.  Clearly, we need to see the full source language text before we can give a "quotation".  More in our Terms and Conditions.

Supplements

We charge supplements to our standard rates for work with short deadlines or requiring translator time outside normal office hours.  In such cases, we will make this clear to you in advance and the supplement will always be clearly stated on the job order, so you won't have any surprises!  More in our Terms and Conditions
